Oriental Spoon - Restaurant Review (Melbourne)

Saturday, January 03, 2015

When it comes to Korean food in Melbourne, Oriental Spoon has always been considered one of the staples for us here at Hashtag. So when New Year's Eve rolled around and we needed a quick fix before venturing to see the fireworks, we turned our shoes once more to Oriental Spoon.

Given the usual tide of wall to wall booking on New Year's Eve in the CBD we were worried we wouldn't be able to find a table. Alas, it seemed the throng of spectators had either opted for finer dining or were congregating at joints along the Yarra. Either way we weren't fussed and were eager to subdue our ravenous appetites.

Service was at the decent standard we were expecting. Nothing to hit any stars on the Good Food Guide but good enough for the setting.

There wasn't time to dawdle on entrees as we needed to be out within the hour so we opted for the Vegetarian Mushroom Salad (for our Vegetarian member), a Chicken Bulgogi and a Beef Bulgogi. As with any good Korean restaurant, the dishes were accompanied with banchan (traditional Korean accompaniments including Kimchi (spicy fermented cabbage) and bean shoots).

The dishes themselves were quite good and came in generous servings. These weren't refined fine flavours but hearty satisfying ones. Given the price (all up $61.40 for the four of us for three main dishes dishes plus six rice servings), they strike a good balance between taste and value.

The fact that we have visited Oriental Spoon a number of times and have yet to have tried the Korean BBQ option (marinated meat and vegetables cooked on your table) is startling. With such a convenient location (opposite Melbourne Central train station on Lonsdale Street), we'll definitely be returning again when in need for reliable Korean.
